How to ask AI so it works
Five lines that make any request clearer, a ready starter prompt, and the five mistakes to avoid.
A good request has five parts. Write one line for each and the answer gets much better.
The five lines
Goal
What you want, in one sentence.
Context
Who it is for, and what exists already.
Limits
Which tools and style to use, and what not to do.
Format
What you want back: files, a plan or steps.
Done when
How you will check that it works.
A starter prompt for any small site
Use the simplest stack that works (plain HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript is fine for a small site; use Next.js and Vercel only if it needs a database or login). English and Arabic with right-to-left. Brand name, logo and colours in one config file. Phone first: test at 390 pixels wide in both languages. Use placeholder images and sample content. Tell me your plan in 8 lines first, then wait until I reply "go".Five mistakes to avoid
- Asking for the whole app in one request. Build in steps and test each one.
- Pasting secret keys into the chat. Describe the key's name, never its value.
- Accepting changes you do not understand. Ask: why did you change this file?
- Skipping a backup. Save your work after each step that works.
- Testing with real customer data. Use sample data only.
