Kerning
Kerning is adjusting the space between two letters so the word looks even.
In a simple example
In a logo, a gap between two letters can look too wide until you move them a little closer.
Why it matters to you
Even spacing makes a logo look finished, while uneven spacing looks careless.
Do not confuse with
Kerning is the gap between two letters. Line height is the gap between lines.
