Browser warns "Your connection is not private" on my own domain

Not checked against the vendor's current screens

What you may see

  • The padlock is missing or a red warning shows

Most likely cause

The certificate does not cover this name, has expired, or the name still points to a server that has no certificate for it.

Check first (about two minutes)

  1. Click the warning's details: does it say expired, wrong name, or untrusted?

The fix prompt

What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.

Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.

Prompt language

Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.

After you tried it, did it work?

Steps

  1. Read the certificate error type, and where the name points now.
  2. For a wrong name: add the name to the host's domains and make the DNS point at the host. For expired: find who issues the certificate (usually the host, automatically) and why renewal failed.
  3. Check CAA records and any proxy in front of the host.

Do not do this

  • Do not buy a certificate if the host provides one.
  • Do not tell visitors to click through the warning.
