Fix · GitHub and Git

remote: Repository not found

What you may see

  • Clone or push says repository not found but I can see it in my browser
  • The repository name was changed or moved to an organisation

Most likely cause

The address Git uses is wrong (a typo or an old name), or you are signed in with an account that cannot see a private repository.

Check first (about two minutes)

  1. Compare git remote -v with the address in your browser, letter by letter.
  2. Check which GitHub account your computer is using.

The fix prompt

What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.

Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.

Prompt language

Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.

After you tried it, did it work?

Steps

  1. Run git remote -v and show me; compare it with the repository address I will paste.
  2. If the address is wrong, fix it with git remote set-url origin <correct address>.
  3. If the address is right, check which account is signed in (gh auth status or the saved credentials) and whether that account has access.

Do not do this

  • Do not share a private repository publicly just to make cloning work.
  • Do not create a new repository to "get around" the error.
