Fix · GitHub and Git

A folder is empty or has an arrow on GitHub (nested repository)

What you may see

  • A folder in my project shows an arrow and I cannot open it on GitHub
  • Git warns about an embedded git repository

Most likely cause

A folder inside the project has its own hidden .git folder (often created by a project generator), so the outer project saves only a pointer to it.

Check first (about two minutes)

  1. Run ls -a <folder> and look for a .git inside it.

The fix prompt

What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.

Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.

Prompt language

Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.

After you tried it, did it work?

Steps

  1. Run git status and ls -a on the folder and show me.
  2. If the inner .git is accidental, ask my permission and then remove the inner .git folder (not the files), un-track the pointer (git rm --cached <folder>), and add the files normally.
  3. Make a safety copy of the folder before removing anything.

Do not do this

  • Do not delete a .git folder that holds history you still need.
  • Do not delete the folder's files.
