Fix · Node, npm and build
command not found: npm, node, next or another tool
What you may see
- The terminal says command not found
- It works on another computer, or worked before I restarted
Most likely cause
The tool is not installed, is not in the list of places the terminal looks (the PATH), or it is a project tool that was never installed with npm install.
Check first (about two minutes)
- Run node -v and npm -v: do both print a version?
- If only a project tool fails (next, vite), run ls node_modules/.bin to see if it is there.
The fix prompt
What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.
Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.
Prompt language
Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.
After you tried it, did it work?
Steps
- Run node -v, npm -v, which node, echo $PATH and show me the output.
- If node or npm is missing, tell me how to install Node from the official source or a version manager, and wait for my yes. Do not install anything yourself.
- If only a project tool is missing, run npm install in the project folder (where package.json is), then run the tool with npm run <script> or npx.
Do not do this
- Do not copy commands from a random website that change system settings.
- Do not use sudo to install project packages.
