Fix · Node, npm and build
npm install fails with network errors (ETIMEDOUT, ENOTFOUND)
What you may see
- Install hangs or says it cannot reach the registry
- It fails on one network and works on another
Most likely cause
Your connection, a VPN, a company proxy or a firewall blocks or slows the package server.
Check first (about two minutes)
- Open https://registry.npmjs.org in a browser: does it load?
- Turn off any VPN and try again.
The fix prompt
What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.
Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.
Prompt language
Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.
After you tried it, did it work?
Steps
- Run npm ping and npm config get registry and show me the results.
- Check for proxy settings or a strange registry in npm config and in a project .npmrc (do not print tokens).
- Retry on another network or mobile hotspot. If a certificate error appears, explain the safe fix. Never turn off certificate checks.
Do not do this
- Do not paste your .npmrc into chat: it may hold a token.
- Do not disable SSL verification.
