Fix · Security mistakes

I committed my .env file

UrgentSecurity

What you may see

  • .env appears in my GitHub repository
  • Deleting it did not remove it from earlier commits

Most likely cause

The .env file holds all your keys; once pushed, every key in it must be treated as known to others.

Check first (about two minutes)

  1. List the NAMES of the variables in the file (not values): which are secrets?

The fix prompt

What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.

Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.

Prompt language

Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.

After you tried it, did it work?

Steps

  1. List the variable names in my .env (names only) and the service each belongs to.
  2. For EACH secret: help me create a new one and disable the old one, one service at a time, and update the host settings.
  3. Stop tracking the file (git rm --cached .env), add .env and similar files to .gitignore, and commit a sample file with names only.
  4. Tell me about optional history clean-up and that it never replaces rotating the keys.

Do not do this

  • Do not rely on the repository being private.
  • Do not delete the local .env until the new values are saved elsewhere.
