Fix · GitHub and Git
.gitignore does not ignore my file
What you may see
- A file I listed in .gitignore still shows up in git status
- My .env is on GitHub even though it is in .gitignore
Most likely cause
Git ignores a file only if it was never tracked; a file saved in an earlier commit stays tracked.
Check first (about two minutes)
- Run git check-ignore -v <file>: if it prints a rule, the rule works.
- Run git ls-files <file>: if it prints the name, the file is tracked.
The fix prompt
What you type here never leaves your browser. The search runs on this page, and nothing is sent to a server or to an AI.
Kept only in this browser, on this device. Keys and passwords are removed before anything is saved.
Prompt language
Paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Cursor, then follow what it says.
After you tried it, did it work?
Steps
- Run git check-ignore -v and git ls-files for the file and show me.
- Check the .gitignore: right folder, no typo, no trailing spaces.
- If the file is tracked, stop tracking it but keep it on my disk: git rm --cached <file>, then commit.
- If the file holds a secret and was ever pushed, tell me to treat the secret as leaked and follow the "key in GitHub" entry.
Do not do this
- Do not assume adding it to .gitignore removed it from GitHub: old commits still have it.
- Do not delete the file from my disk.
